Burners and Their Uses

Gas burners have been a household appliance for quite some time now. Before the invention of gas burners, wood was used by people as a fire source. There are many undeveloped countries around the world today that still use wood in creating a fire. The reason for the popularity of gas burners in households is due to the fact that one can control the fire efficiently. Different foods require different levels of heat and since fire can be manipulated when using gas burners, they become an ideal choice for cooking. Burners also define the level of development in a certain country or civilization. Beside the gas burner in our homes, there are other types of burners available that have different applications.

By definition, a gas burner is a device that has a nozzle or jet piece and is used to generate flame using combustible gaseous fuel such as acetylene or natural gas to heat up products or food when cooking. To ensure there are complete combustion and more heat generated by the flame, some burners mix the air with the fuel through an air inlet before combustion. Besides cooking, gas burners can be used in applications such as welding and soldering. In instances where the flame is required to be extremely hot such as in the case of melting steel, the fuel is mixed with oxygen instead of air. A good example of such gaseous burners that have an air inlet to allow air to mix with the fuel would be the Bunsen burner which is found in school laboratories for chemistry experiments.

The combustion oil usually goes through a nozzle under high pressure to be atomized and then ignited by an electric spark as air is forced through by an electric fan. A proper amount of air is also mixed with the fuel for best combustion. Spray nozzles usually inject the fuel or oil for combustion into the combustion chamber. The oil in these nozzles is of very high pressure. Sometime these fuels may contain lumps and cause erosion, therefore regular checking and replacements of faulty parts are required.

Some other examples of burners are coal and wood burners. Coal burners are typically used in heavy industries as well as countries that have reserves of coals. Wood burners are not commonly used now as they do not provide as much convenience as gas or oil burners. The application and the installation of each type of burners differ from one another. At the end of the day, they all have the same objective; to generate heat.

The uses of various types of burners are distinct from each other. Both oil and gas burners are primarily used for cooking but the installation of the former tend to be more expensive than the latter. Wood burners, on the other hand, can work as a heating system making this type of burner cost-efficient.
